The Danger of Misinterpreting Scripture –
The Word of God is true, alive, active, and powerful to save and transform us inside out — if taken in its proper context. However, it can become a fatal weapon in the hands of the enemy when pulled out of context to form a doctrine around a single verse that suits our comfort. To understand God’s Word accurately, we must compare Scripture with Scripture, reading both the verses before and after.
- “Your word is very pure, therefore Your servant loves it.” — Psalm 119:140
- “The sum of Your word is truth.” — Psalm 119:160
A Warning for Teachers
Someone in my prayer group was deeply disturbed by a misleading interpretation of Romans 8:1 shared in a small gathering. In these last days, we as God’s beloved in Christ must be extremely careful not to mislead or be misled. Before teaching others, we must verify that our understanding of a verse aligns with the whole counsel of God. Scripture warns us clearly:
- “Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.” — James 3:1
Understanding Romans 8:1 in its Context
- Romans 8:1 (NKJV) –“There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.”
- Romans 8:1 (AMP) – “Therefore there is now no condemnation [no guilty verdict, no punishment] for those who are in Christ Jesus [who believe in Him as personal Lord and Savior].”
This verse is beautiful, powerful, and comforting! Praise God for everyone who has accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior. However, this verse begins with “therefore.” That means God said something important before this statement — something that gives it meaning. To fully grasp Romans 8:1, we must look at the verses just before it in Romans 7:22–25.
The Struggle Between Flesh and Spirit (Romans 7:22–25)
- “For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man. But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? I thank God — through Jesus Christ our Lord!” — Romans 7:22–25
Even the great Apostle Paul, who performed miracles and wrote much of the New Testament, did not claim to be exempt from temptation. He wrestled against sin just as we do. Yet, he delighted in God’s law and desired to please Him.
It is from this struggle that Romans 8:1 flows. Paul understood that true freedom from condemnation belongs only to those who live in Christ — walking according to the Spirit, not the flesh.
What It Means To Be “In Christ Jesus”
Romans 8:1 asks each of us a sobering question: Am I truly in Christ, or merely imagining that I am? If I once lived as a liar, gossip, addict, or adulterer before coming to Christ and continue in those sins afterward — though calling myself born-again and Spirit-filled — I am deceiving myself.
Jesus warns: “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven… I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’” — Matthew 7:21–23
To “practice” sin is to repeatedly do what God forbids. Such a person lives in lawlessness, not in Christ.
The Seriousness of Sin
Jesus’ words in Mark 9:43–48 show how serious sin is: “If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off… it is better for you to enter life maimed, rather than having two hands, to go to hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched… where ‘their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.’”
The Lord doesn’t call us to literally mutilate ourselves, but to deal ruthlessly with sin — removing anything that causes us to fall. It’s far better to enter heaven having lost something earthly than to keep it and end up in eternal fire.
Walking According to the Spirit
Galatians 5:16–26 teaches: “Walk by the Spirit, and you will not fulfil the desire of the flesh… The deeds of the flesh are evident: immorality, impurity, idolatry, jealousy, anger, drunkenness… and those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control… Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.”
To truly belong to Christ, we must personally crucify our sinful desires — even when it costs us our pride, comfort, relationships, or possessions. That is what it means to walk according to the Spirit.
The Eternal Consequences of Sin
“But cowards, unbelievers, the corrupt, murderers, the immoral, those who practice witchcraft, idol worshipers, and all liars — their fate is in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.” — Revelation 21:8
Sin is deadly. It costs eternal life. Instead of excusing ourselves, we must repent with tears and seek the Lord’s forgiveness and grace to overcome.
The Call to Holiness and Repentance
“And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.” — Matthew 1:21
Jesus didn’t come to excuse our sins but to save us from them. His name, His blood, His Word, and His grace are our weapons against the devil. If Satan could twist Scripture to tempt Jesus (Matthew 4:6), he can surely use it against us — unless we rightly divide the Word of truth.
“Work out your salvation with fear and trembling.” — Philippians 2:12
If Romans 8:1 applied to all Christians — whether living in holiness or in sin — then Paul’s warnings in Philippians 2:12 and Hebrews 10:29 would be meaningless. But Scripture never contradicts itself. Therefore, Romans 8:1 applies only to those who are truly in Christ, walking in the Spirit, and fighting sin daily.
Living in the Light
“This is the message… that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.” — 1 John 1:5–7
God is pure and holy; there is no tolerance for sin in Him. His Word is light —
Your Word, O Lord, is a lamp unto my feet and a light to my path.” — Psalm 119:105
Only those who walk in that light — who obey His Word — receive the continual cleansing of the blood of Jesus.
Summary
True freedom from condemnation belongs not to those who merely claim Christ,
but to those who walk in His Spirit, crucify the flesh, and daily depend on His grace to overcome sin.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
We need Your grace to be doers of Your Word and to fully rely on Your Spirit to lead us. Forgive us for the times when we enjoyed sin instead of submitting to You and resisting the devil.
Lord, help us to overcome. Empower us in our weakness. Create in us a clean heart that delights in You, desires more of You, and hates sin.
Teach us to crucify our flesh with its passions and to imitate You in all things — for Your glory alone. In Jesus’ mighty name we pray. Amen.
