“Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled” — A Choice We Must Make — John 14.1

Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me.”

Jesus did not speak these words as a mere suggestion, but as a loving command from a caring God. The phrase “let not” clearly implies permissiondo not allow, do not consent, do not give room. This tells us something profound: we have a role to play in what dwells in our hearts.  It’s a matter of careful and personal choice, not something that God can control.

Negative thoughts and emotions—fear, anxiety, worry, despair, bitterness, unforgiveness—are often imposed or dumped upon us by the enemy. We usually excuse them as natural, human, unavoidable. And yes, they may be unavoidable or unpreventable, but they are not unmanageable or uncontrollable.
That is precisely why Jesus taught us not to let our hearts be troubled.  In other words, don’t allow negative emotions and thoughts control you.

Scripture confirms this truth repeatedly:

      • Proverbs 14:30“A sound heart is life to the body, but envy is rottenness to the bones.”
      • Proverbs 15:15“All the days of the afflicted are evil, but he who is of a merry heart has a continual feast.”
      • Both these verses again imply that we have to make a conscious choice between soundness of heart that gives life and envy that rots the bones.

What lives in the heart affects the whole person—spirit, soul, and body.

    A Matter of Choice

Whether negativity remains in our hearts or is cast out depends on us.  God will not force this decision. He honors our free will which is a gift that He has liberally given to us.  The authority has been given to us, and Jesus has already shown us the way.

He taught us to quickly resist, to proclaim our faith in God and in Jesus Christ, and to refuse the enemy’s attempts to settle fear and unrest in our hearts.

    Worry Is Surrendering to Fear

When we worry, we unknowingly surrender to fearFalse Evidence Appearing Real.

    But Scripture is clear:

        • 2 Timothy 1:7“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.”

Fear does not come from God. It is a tool of the enemy meant to paralyze faith and steal peace.  As you are reading this post, if you have the faith, you can surely receive what God has given.  Just say out aloud –

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving me power, love and soundness of mind.  I receive it by faith in Jesus’ name. Amen.

      Godly Sorrow vs Worldly Sorrow

          • 2 Corinthians 7:10“For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation… but the sorrow of the world produces death.”

Not all sorrow is the same. The enemy uses worldly sorrow to drag the heart into heaviness, while God uses godly sorrow to bring healing, repentance, and life.  Once again let me remind you, you’re not left helpless in your pain.  God has given you the authority to resist it.  Choose Now.

The Mind Set on the Spirit

            • Romans 8:6“For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.”
            • Romans 8:13 – reminds us that by the Spirit, we put to death destructive patterns.
            • To be carnally minded is to constantly think about worldly things and worrying about it, which ultimately destroys your peace and causes so much disturbance and inner turmoil that people die prematurely either by suicide or sickness.
            • To be spiritually minded is to focus on God and His Word and not on circumstances surrounding you which empowers you with life and peace.
            • Peace is not automatic—it flows from a mind intentionally set on the Spirit. Spirit is the Word of God – Jesus said in John 6.63 – “The flesh profits nothing.  It is the Spirit who gives life.  The Words that I have spoken are Life and Spirit.”

          Jesus on Worry

          Jesus addressed worry directly:

              • Matthew 6:25–34“Do not worry about your life…”
              • Matthew 6:28 – “And why do you worry about your clothes?”
              • Matthew 6:31 – “Do not worry saying, ‘What shall we eat?, or What shall we drink? or What shall we wear?”
              • Matthew 6:34 – “Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.  Each day has enough troubles of its own.”

He didn’t deny life’s pressures, but He commanded us not to live under their weight. Worry adds nothing—but faith releases peace.

            Resist and Draw Near

                • James 4:7–8“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.”

When we first ‘Submit ourselves to God,’ we are empowered to resist the devil with the assurance that he will flee.  Resistance is active, not passive. When we resist fear and negativity, and draw near to God, the enemy must retreat.

              Closing Thought

Jesus has already done His part.
The question is—what will we allow to dwell in our hearts?

Peace is not the absence of trouble; it is the result of refusing to let trouble take residence within us.

“Let not your heart be troubled.”  Amen
