All To Jesus I Surrender written in 1896 by Judson W. Van De Venter

“All to Jesus I Surrender” is a beloved hymn written in 1896 by Judson W. Van De Venter. The hymn was born out of the author’s personal struggle to fully surrender his life to God’s calling.

All to Jesus I surrender
All to Him I freely give
I will ever love and trust Him
In His presence daily live

All to Jesus I surrender
Only at Your feet I bow
Worldly pleasures all forsaken
Fill me with Your love and power

I surrender all
I surrender all
All to You, my blessed Savior
I surrender all
All to You, my blessed Savior
I surrender all

All to Jesus I surrender
Burn in me now, sacred flame
Be my joy and my salvation
Glory, glory to Your name

I surrender all
I surrender all
All to You, my blessed Savior
I surrender all
All to You, my blessed Savior
I surrender all

All to You, my blessed Savior
I surrender all
All to You, my blessed Savior
I surrender all

All to You, my blessed Savior
I surrender all
All to You, my blessed Savior
I surrender all.

All to Jesus I Surrender — The Story Behind the Hymn

Few hymns express the heart of Christian discipleship as simply and powerfully as “All to Jesus I Surrender.” For more than a century, believers around the world have sung these words as a prayer of dedication and trust in Christ.

The Story Behind the Hymn

The hymn was written in 1896 by Judson W. Van De Venter, a teacher and talented artist who faced a deep personal struggle. Van De Venter had the opportunity to pursue a successful career in art. Yet he also sensed that God might be calling him to devote his life to evangelistic ministry.

For five years, he wrestled with this decision. His heart was divided between personal ambition and obedience to God’s call. Eventually he came to a moment of complete surrender, choosing to give his life fully to the Lord’s work.

Reflecting on that turning point, he later wrote: “For some time I had struggled between developing my talent in the field of art and going into full-time evangelistic work. At last the pivotal hour came, and I surrendered all.”

From that experience came the words of this hymn—a testimony of yielding every part of life to Christ.

The Music

The moving melody we know today was composed by Winfield S. Weeden, a musician and friend of Van De Venter. Weeden’s gentle and reverent tune perfectly complements the message of surrender expressed in the lyrics.

Together, the words and music created a hymn that has been sung in churches, revivals, and personal devotions for generations.

The Message of the Hymn

At its heart, “All to Jesus I Surrender” is a prayer.

It is not merely about singing beautiful words; it is about offering our lives to Christ without reservation. Each verse expresses a deeper level of trust and devotion:

  • Surrendering our will

  • Trusting His saving grace

  • Seeking His presence

  • Living fully for Him

The hymn reminds us that true peace and joy are found not in holding tightly to our own plans, but in placing our lives into God’s hands.

A Prayer of Dedication

Many believers have sung this hymn at moments of commitment—during times of prayer, revival meetings, or personal decisions to follow Christ more closely.

The message remains timeless:
When we surrender our lives to Jesus, we discover that His plans are always better than our own.

May the words of this hymn encourage us again to say:

“All to Jesus I surrender,
All to Him I freely give.”

Apostle Paul’s words in Romans 12:1 beautifully reflects the heart of the hymn: offering our whole lives to God.

Present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.”

This points to the words of our Lord Jesus Christ in Luke 9:23

Whoever wants to be My disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow Me.”
