No nation in human history has been scattered across the earth, maintained its identity without a homeland for 2,000 years, and returned to the same land, speaking the same ancient language. Israel's very existence is a miracle. ✝️
The Beginning — Abraham to the Kingdom of Israel
Genesis 12 to 2 Samuel · c.2000 BC — 1000 BC ✝️
Genesis 12:1-3 — YHWH called Abram out of Ur of the Chaldeans — modern-day Iraq — and made him the most consequential promise in history: a land, a nation, and a blessing to ALL peoples on earth. This was not Abraham's idea. It was God's sovereign choice — unearned, unconditional, irreversible. ✝️
Abraham had two sons — Ishmael through Hagar (ancestor of Arab peoples) and Isaac through Sarah. Both were loved and blessed by God — Genesis 17:20. But the covenant line ran through Isaac — God's specific choice — not because Ishmael was rejected but because God's sovereign plan required a specific lineage through which the Messiah would come. ✝️
Isaac's son Jacob was renamed ISRAEL by God Himself — Genesis 32:28 — "Your name will no longer be Jacob but Israel — because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome." The nation took his name. His twelve sons became the twelve tribes of Israel. ✝️
Israel descended to Egypt during Joseph's time — Genesis 46. Within generations they became slaves. For 400 years. After Solomon the kingdom split — Israel (north, 10 tribes) and Judah (south, 2 tribes). The northern kingdom fell to Assyria in 722 BC — the ten tribes scattered. The southern kingdom fell to Babylon in 605-586 BC — Jerusalem and the Temple destroyed, the people taken captive. ✝️
But God had promised — Jeremiah 29:10 — "After 70 years in Babylon I will come to you and fulfil my good promise to bring you back." He did. Exactly 70 years. ✝️
Under Cyrus the Great of Persia — himself prophesied by name 150 years before his birth in Isaiah 44:28 — the Jewish people returned and rebuilt. Ezra brought the Law back. Nehemiah rebuilt the walls. The Second Temple was completed. ✝️
After Malachi — 400 years of prophetic silence. No prophet. No new word. And then — in the fullness of time — Galatians 4:4 — God sent His Son. Born a Jew. Tribe of Judah. Son of David. The Hebrew language — the ONLY dead language ever raised back to life in human history — was revived by Eliezer Ben-Yehuda in the early 20th century so that a nation returning from 70 different countries could speak one tongue.
