Answering with Grace and Truth

This objection reflects a genuine and important point. The Hebrew scriptures describe two distinct pictures of the Messiah that Jewish scholars themselves have wrestled with — a Suffering Servant (Isaiah 53, Psalm 22) and a Conquering King (Isaiah 9:6-7, Zechariah 14). Many ancient rabbis resolved this by proposing two different Messiahs — Messiah ben Joseph who suffers and Messiah ben David who reigns.

The New Testament presents the same Jesus in two comings — the first as the Suffering Servant who died for sin and rose again, the second as the Conquering King who will reign and establish God's kingdom on earth. The peace that Messiah brings in His first coming is peace with God (Romans 5:1). The universal peace of Isaiah 11 is reserved for His second coming — which is still future for both Jews and Christians.

Jesus fulfilled over 300 specific Messianic prophecies in His first coming with mathematical precision — including the timing of Daniel 9:25-26 which predicted the Messiah would come and be cut off before the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 AD. If Messiah had not come before 70 AD, Daniel's prophecy fails. Jesus came. The Temple fell. ✝️

The Shema — "Hear O Israel, the LORD our God, the LORD is one" — is the foundation of Jewish monotheism and Christians fully affirm it. There is one God. The question is what the Hebrew word for "one" — echad — actually means.

Echad in Hebrew means a compound unity — not an absolute singular (which would be yachid). The same word echad is used in Genesis 2:24 — "the two shall become one (echad) flesh." Two persons, one unity. It is also used in Numbers 13:23 of one cluster of grapes containing many. The Shema uses a word that already allows for plurality within unity.

Furthermore Elohim — the name for God used throughout Genesis — is itself a plural form. Genesis 1:26 — "Let Us make man in Our image." Isaiah 6:8 — "Whom shall I send? Who will go for Us?" The plural is there in the Hebrew scriptures from the very beginning. ✝️

This is the most important passage in this entire conversation and deserves careful examination. The collective Israel interpretation is a relatively recent development in Jewish thought — the majority of ancient rabbinical commentators including Rabbi Moshe Alshich, the Talmud (Sanhedrin 98b) and the Targum Jonathan understood Isaiah 53 as Messianic.

The passage itself resists the collective interpretation when read carefully. The speaker in Isaiah 53:1-9 speaks of "we" and "our" — a group that recognises and confesses something about a third person — "he." The suffering servant is distinguished from those speaking about him. He bears the sins of others — Israel cannot bear its own sins. He is sinless — "no violence in his hands, no deceit in his mouth" (v9) — but Israel's own prophets consistently describe Israel as sinful. He dies and is buried — Israel as a nation has not died. He sees his offspring after his death and prolongs his days — resurrection.

Every detail of Isaiah 53 matches the life, death and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth with a precision that is either the most remarkable coincidence in history or exactly what it claims to be — prophecy fulfilled. ✝️

The concept of one ultimate reality (Brahman) behind many manifestations is a philosophical position — but the God of the Bible is not a philosophical concept. He is a personal Being who speaks, acts in history, makes covenants, answers prayer and became human in a specific person at a specific time in a specific place. These are not compatible descriptions of the same reality.

The question "why only Jesus" is answered by Jesus Himself — "No one comes to the Father except through Me" (John 14:6). The reason is not exclusivity for its own sake but the nature of the problem. Sin requires atonement. Atonement requires a sinless substitute. Only Jesus — fully God and fully human, without sin — could qualify. A manifestation or avatar who is ultimately divine cannot truly become human and cannot truly die for human sin. The Incarnation is unique precisely because it had to be. ✝️

The concept of avatar — divine descent — is genuinely interesting as a parallel structure, but the differences are more significant than the similarities. Hindu avatars descend to restore cosmic order (dharma) and are ultimately divine beings temporarily inhabiting human form. They do not truly become human, do not suffer as humans suffer and do not die for human sin.

Jesus is unique in several specific ways — He was born, not descended. He grew up, learned, got tired, wept and suffered genuinely as a human being. He died a real death — not an appearance of death. He rose bodily from the dead — verified by over 500 witnesses. And His death was not to restore cosmic order but to pay the specific penalty for human sin and restore personal relationship between each individual and God. The Incarnation is not mythology — it is dateable, locatable, verifiable history. ✝️

Karma and reincarnation offer a framework for suffering — every present suffering is the result of past actions in previous lives. It is internally coherent but raises serious questions. If we cannot remember previous lives, how are we being taught by suffering for them? If karma is automatically self-correcting, why has the world not improved over millions of cycles? And most profoundly — who breaks the cycle? Karma is self-perpetuating. Every action creates more karma. There is no mechanism for escape except moksha — which itself requires either perfect action (impossible) or dissolution of the self.

The biblical framework is different. There is one life, one death and after that judgement (Hebrews 9:27). Suffering is real and the Bible does not minimise it — Jesus wept at Lazarus's tomb. But sin is dealt with once and finally at the cross, not worked out across endless cycles. And the self — the person — is not dissolved into the infinite but known, loved and restored in relationship with a personal God. ✝️

This objection has historical merit as a criticism of colonialism — which was genuinely wrong and caused real damage. But it confuses the vehicle with the message. Christianity did not begin in the West. It began in Israel — in the Middle East — among Jewish people. Jesus was Asian by geography. The first Christians were Middle Eastern. The gospel reached Africa (Ethiopia — Acts 8:26-40) before it reached Europe. The Apostle Thomas brought the gospel to India within forty years of the resurrection — before Western colonialism existed by over a thousand years.

The Mar Thoma Christians of Kerala trace their community to Thomas himself — an indigenous Indian Christian tradition older than any Western missionary contact. The gospel is not Western. It was brought to the West the same way it was brought everywhere else — by witnesses who believed the resurrection was true. ✝️

"Son of God" in the biblical sense does not mean what it appears to mean in human terms — a biological offspring of God through a human mother. It is a theological title expressing the unique divine nature and relationship of Jesus with the Father. John 1:1 makes this clear — "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." The Son is eternal, not created.

The Quran itself calls Jesus the Word of God (Kalimatullah) and a Spirit from God (Ruhullah) — titles given to no other prophet including Muhammad. If Jesus is the Word of God, then asking where was the Word before creation is asking where was God before creation — and the answer is the same. Jesus as Son of God does not compromise God's oneness — it reveals the fullness of who God is. ✝️

The Bible is the most manuscript-supported document in ancient history — over 5,800 Greek New Testament manuscripts and over 11,000 manuscripts in other languages. When these are compared across centuries and continents the agreement is extraordinary. The Dead Sea Scrolls discovered in 1947 contain Old Testament texts from 100 BC that are virtually identical to manuscripts a thousand years newer. If the Bible was corrupted — when, by whom and which version is the corrupted one?

Furthermore the Quran itself speaks of the Torah and Gospel positively — calling them guidance and light (Surah 5:46) and commanding Muhammad to consult "the People of the Book" if in doubt (Surah 10:94). If the Bible was already corrupted before Muhammad, why does the Quran commend it? ✝️

This claim from Surah 4:157 contradicts the most thoroughly attested event of the ancient world. The crucifixion of Jesus is confirmed not only by the four Gospels but by Roman historian Tacitus (Annals 15:44), Jewish historian Josephus (Antiquities 18:3), Pliny the Younger and multiple other sources completely independent of the New Testament — all written within living memory of the event.

The disciples who stood at the foot of the cross included His own mother Mary, the apostle John and Mary Magdalene — people who knew His face intimately. Roman soldiers were professional executioners who verified death before releasing any body. Pilate demanded confirmation before releasing Jesus's body (Mark 15:44-45). The substitution theory requires us to believe that everyone who knew Jesus most closely was systematically deceived — and that over 500 witnesses who saw Him after the resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:6) also saw someone else. ✝️

The Sikh understanding of one God — Waheguru, the Wonderful Lord — is genuinely monotheistic and in that sense shares common ground with biblical faith. The question is not whether God is one but who God is and how He has made Himself known and accessible to us.

The Bible declares God is one (Deuteronomy 6:4) — fully agreed. But it also declares that this one God has made Himself fully known in the person of Jesus Christ — "Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father" (John 14:9). And that the one God has provided one specific way for human beings to be reconciled to Him — through the atoning death and resurrection of Christ. The question for every sincere seeker of Waheguru is not whether God is one but whether Jesus's claims about Himself are true. ✝️

Sikhism's emphasis on equality, seva (service) and love for God is genuinely admirable and reflects something of the image of God that all human beings carry. These values are not wrong — they are beautiful. The question Christianity raises is not about values but about the human condition.

Even the most devoted practitioners of any system of values find themselves falling short of their own standards. The problem is not ignorance of how to live — it is the inability to consistently live that way. Sin — the fundamental bent of human nature away from God — is not solved by better teaching or better values. It requires a Saviour. Christianity does not come to replace good values but to deal with the root problem that prevents us from living them consistently, and to restore the personal relationship with God that all the values in the world cannot substitute for. ✝️

The LDS church uses Christian language but fills it with different content. Key LDS teachings that contradict Scripture include: God was once a human man who became divine (contradicting Malachi 3:6 — "I the LORD do not change" and Numbers 23:19 — "God is not a man"). Humans can become gods (contradicting Isaiah 43:10 — "Before me no god was formed nor will there be one after me"). Jesus and Lucifer are spirit brothers — both created beings of the same heavenly Father. The Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants and Pearl of Great Price are additional scripture equal to or above the Bible.

These are not minor theological differences. They redefine God, Christ, salvation and Scripture itself. The Bible warns specifically about adding to Scripture (Revelation 22:18) and about a different gospel (Galatians 1:8). The Jesus of Mormonism and the Jesus of Scripture are not the same person. ✝️

The JW teaching that Jesus is a created being — specifically Michael the archangel — requires them to translate John 1:1 as "the Word was a god" (with a small g and an indefinite article that does not exist in Greek). No credible Greek scholar supports this translation. The Greek "theos en ho logos" (the Word was God) uses exactly the same construction for God (theos) as elsewhere in the passage.

Hebrews 1:5-6 explicitly distinguishes Jesus from the angels — "To which of the angels did God ever say, You are my Son? ... Let all God's angels worship him." Angels worship Jesus. Michael is an angel. Angels do not worship other angels. Jesus accepted worship from His disciples (Matthew 28:9,17) and from Thomas who called Him "My Lord and my God" (John 20:28) — and did not correct him. Accepting worship is something only God can legitimately do. ✝️

The 144,000 of Revelation 7:4-8 are explicitly identified in the text — they are 12,000 from each of the twelve tribes of Israel. They are a specific group with a specific Jewish identity and a specific end-times role. Reading them as a general class of believers going to heaven requires ignoring what the passage itself says about who they are.

John 3:16 says whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life — no numerical limit. John 14:2-3 — "In my Father's house are many rooms... I am going to prepare a place for you." No restriction to 144,000. 1 Thessalonians 4:17 — all those who are alive at Christ's return will be "caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air." The JW two-class system of salvation has no scriptural basis. ✝️

The World Mission Society Church of God teaches that Galatians 4:26 — "the Jerusalem that is above is free, and she is our mother" — proves a divine feminine being called Heavenly Mother Jerusalem. They also claim Elohim's plural form indicates both Father and Mother. Both interpretations are eisegesis — reading a meaning into the text rather than from it.

Galatians 4:26 is an allegorical passage in which Paul contrasts two covenants — Hagar representing the old covenant and Sarah representing the new. "The Jerusalem that is above" is a metaphor for the community of believers in the new covenant — not a divine feminine being. Paul himself explains the allegory in Galatians 4:24-25. No credible biblical scholar in two thousand years of church history understood this as a divine mother until this cult was founded in 1964.

Elohim's plural form has been discussed by Jewish and Christian scholars for millennia — it points to the plurality within the one God (Father, Son and Spirit) not to a male-female divine pair. Additionally they teach that their founder Ahn Sahng-hong (1918-1985) was the second coming of Christ — a claim Scripture rejects entirely (Matthew 24:26-27). ✝️

Matthew 16:18 — "On this rock I will build my church" — is the key passage. The rock Jesus referred to was Peter's confession of faith: "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God" (v16). It is faith in Christ — not the office of Peter — that is the foundation of the church. Paul in 1 Corinthians 3:11 is explicit: "No one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ."

The church Christ built is not an institution with a headquarters — it is the community of all genuine believers in Christ across all time, all places and all denominations. Ephesians 5:25-27 describes it as those "washed by the water of the word." The test of belonging to the true church is not membership in an institution but genuine faith in Christ, new birth and the indwelling Holy Spirit. ✝️

Scripture itself never grants equal authority to tradition — it consistently calls believers back to the written word as the final standard. Isaiah 8:20 — "To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, they have no light of dawn." Acts 17:11 — the Bereans examined the Scriptures daily to verify even what Paul taught and were commended for it. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 — "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."

On the Pope — "Holy Father" is a title Jesus uses for God the Father alone (John 17:11). Matthew 23:9 — "Do not call anyone on earth your father, for you have one Father, and He is in heaven." No human being — however sincere or however exalted their office — can be the infallible voice of God to the world. That role belongs to Scripture illuminated by the Holy Spirit. ✝️

Mary is deeply honoured in Scripture — the angel called her highly favoured (Luke 1:28), Elizabeth called her blessed among women (Luke 1:42) and she is called blessed by all generations (Luke 1:48). Her obedience and faith were extraordinary. Scripture honours her. The question is whether she intercedes for believers now — and whether Cana supports this.

At Cana Mary said to Jesus "They have no wine." Jesus replied — "Woman" (not Mother) — "what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come." He did not act at her direction. He acted in His own sovereign timing. Then Mary said to the servants: "Do whatever He tells you." Those are the last instructional words Mary speaks in all four Gospels. Do whatever HE tells you. Not come through me. Not pray to me. She points entirely away from herself to Christ. Even at Cana — the very miracle used to justify Marian intercession — Mary herself directs people to Jesus alone. And 1 Timothy 2:5 settles it: there is one mediator between God and humanity — the man Christ Jesus. ✝️

Purgatory as a doctrine derives primarily from 2 Maccabees 12:46 — a book in the Catholic canon but not in the Hebrew Bible or the Protestant canon. The New Testament is clear and consistent on what happens after death for the believer. 2 Corinthians 5:8 — "to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord." Not absent from the body and spending hundreds of years in purging fire. Present with the Lord — immediately.

Hebrews 9:27-28 — "people are destined to die once and after that to face judgment." One death. One judgment. No purging between. The Old Testament saints who died before Christ were held in a place of waiting (Abraham's bosom — Luke 16:22) until Christ descended and released them (1 Peter 3:18-20, Ephesians 4:8-9). That place no longer exists — Christ has already gone to the Father and opened the way. The assurance Scripture gives is not eventual entry after sufficient purging but immediate confident access through the blood of Jesus (Hebrews 10:19-22). ✝️
