From Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 22:13 — Christ as the Beginning, woven through the whole of Scripture in the original languages.
The Bible was written in three languages — Hebrew (Old Testament), Greek (New Testament) and small portions in Aramaic. Every translation into English carries the translator's interpretive choices. When we go back to the original languages, we often find layers of meaning that enrich and deepen what we already know.
This teaching examines key passages in their original languages — word by word, with pronunciation and meaning — to show a thread that runs from the very first word of Scripture to the very last chapter of Revelation: Jesus Christ as the Beginning and the End. ✝️

Genesis 1:1 — The Very First Word of Scripture
Hebrew — Bereshit bara Elohim
📌 Hebrew reads right to left. The original has no vowels written — vowel markings (the small dots and dashes you see) were added by Jewish scholars called the Masoretes around 600-900 AD to preserve pronunciation.
The very first word of Scripture — Bereshit — contains within it the seed of the entire revelation of Christ. Reshit (beginning) is a title that Scripture applies both to Wisdom in Proverbs 8 and to Christ in Revelation and Colossians. The opening word of the Bible is not merely a time marker. It is a name. ✝️
Notice also that Elohim — God in plural form — creates through speaking (Genesis 1:3 — "And God said..."). The speaking God, the Word through whom all things were made, is introduced in the very structure of the opening sentence before we even reach chapter 3. John 1:1-3 makes this connection explicit. ✝️
The BET Prefix — "In" or "With / Through"?
The interpretive question at the heart of Genesis 1:1
The Hebrew letter Bet (ב) is a preposition prefix — one of the most common in Hebrew. Attached to the front of a word it can mean:
✦ Temporal — "In" (indicating when): "In the beginning" — the standard English translation
✦ Locative — "In" (indicating where): "In this place"
✦ Instrumental — "By means of / Through / With" (indicating how): "By means of the Beginning"
The same three meanings occur throughout the Hebrew Bible. Context determines which one applies — and in Genesis 1:1, both the temporal and instrumental readings are grammatically valid.
If the BET is instrumental, Genesis 1:1 reads: "By means of / Through the Beginning, God created the heavens and the earth."
This is not a modern idea. Ancient Jewish rabbis and commentators noticed the unusual opening of Torah — why does it begin with a BET (the second letter of the alphabet) rather than an ALEPH (the first)? Some answered: because it begins not with a letter but with a Person — the Reshit, the Beginning, through whom God created all things.
This reading aligns precisely with what the New Testament explicitly states — John 1:3: "Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made." Colossians 1:16: "For in him all things were created — things in heaven and on earth." Christ is the instrument, the agent and the purpose of creation. ✝️
The mainstream translation "In the beginning" is not wrong — it is the reading supported by the Septuagint (the Greek translation of the OT, c.250 BC) and the majority of ancient and modern translators. The instrumental reading "By means of / Through the Beginning" is a legitimate minority interpretation with strong theological support from the New Testament but should be understood as an enriching insight rather than a correction of the standard translation. Both readings are true. ✝️
Proverbs 8:22-23 — Wisdom as the Reshit
Hebrew — The same word Reshit used of personified Wisdom
"The LORD possessed me at the beginning of His work, the first of His acts of old. Ages ago I was set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth."
Proverbs 8:22-23 ✝️In Proverbs 8 Wisdom speaks in the first person — describing herself as present with God before creation, as the craftsman at His side (verse 30), delighting in the inhabited world. Paul directly identifies Christ as "the wisdom of God" in 1 Corinthians 1:24 and says in Him "are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" (Colossians 2:3).
The word used of Wisdom in Proverbs 8:22 — Reshit — is the same word embedded in the opening of Genesis. Scripture is drawing a deliberate line: the Reshit of Proverbs 8 and the Reshit of Genesis 1 are the same Person. Before creation began, Christ the Wisdom of God was there — the instrument, companion and purpose of all that would be made. ✝️
John 1:1 — The Greek Mirror of Genesis
Greek — En arche en ho Logos
📌 Greek reads left to right like English. The Greek New Testament was written in Koine Greek — the common Greek spoken across the Mediterranean world in the 1st century AD.
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made."
John 1:1-3 ✝️John 1:1 makes three precisely crafted statements in the Greek:
✦ "The Word was in the beginning" — He pre-exists all creation
✦ "The Word was with God" (pros ton Theon — literally "face to face with God") — He is distinct from the Father, in intimate relationship
✦ "The Word was God" — He shares the divine nature fully
One person — the Logos — is simultaneously distinct from God and identical with God. This is the Trinity in three Greek phrases. ✝️
John's opening is not accidental. "En arche" — the exact same phrase that opens the Greek Old Testament — is John's way of saying: what Genesis 1:1 shows you obscurely, I am now going to show you plainly. The Reshit of Genesis, the Wisdom of Proverbs 8, the Word through whom all things were made — His name is Jesus. ✝️
Colossians 1:15-18 — Christ as the Arche
Greek — Paul's explicit declaration
"The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth... all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together... He is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead."
Colossians 1:15-18 ✝️Colossians 1:16 uses three Greek prepositions to describe Christ's relationship to creation — each one profound:
✦ En auto — "In him" all things were created — He is the sphere of creation
✦ Di' autou — "Through him" all things were created — He is the agent of creation
✦ Eis auton — "For him" all things were created — He is the purpose of creation
Creation did not merely come through Christ. Creation exists for Christ. He is its origin, its means and its goal. ✝️
Revelation 3:14 — Jesus Names Himself the Arche
Greek — Christ's own declaration
"These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God's creation."
Revelation 3:14 ✝️Here in Revelation 3:14 the Logos of John 1:1 — now revealed as the glorified Christ — applies to Himself the title Arche. The same word that described the Beginning in Genesis 1:1 (Bereshit) and in John 1:1 (En arche) is now spoken by Christ in the first person. He is not merely associated with the Beginning — He claims it as His own title and identity. ✝️
Revelation 22:13 — Alpha and Omega
Greek — The Last Word of Scripture on the Beginning and End
"I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End."
Revelation 22:13 ✝️Revelation 22:13 gives three parallel declarations, each expressing the same truth from a different angle:
✦ Alpha and Omega — in the language of letters: He encompasses all of communication, all of revelation, all of the Word of God
✦ First and Last — in the language of order: He is before all things and after all things; nothing precedes or follows Him
✦ Beginning and End (Arche and Telos) — in the language of origin and purpose: He is where everything came from and where everything is going
The word that opened the Bible — Bereshit, In/Through the Beginning — finds its final answer here. The Beginning has a name. ✝️
The Complete Thread — Genesis to Revelation
One word. One person. The whole of Scripture.
The Thread of the Beginning — Bereshit to Telos ✝️
The Bible opens: "In/Through the Beginning God created..." The Reshit — the Beginning — is present at the first act of creation.
Wisdom speaks: "The LORD possessed me as His Reshit, the first of His works." Personified Wisdom — identified with Christ in 1 Corinthians 1:24 — is the Reshit of creation.
John opens his Gospel with the exact phrase of the Greek Genesis: "In the beginning was the Word." He identifies the Reshit of Genesis as the Logos — the divine Word.
Paul declares: "He is the Arche, the firstborn from the dead." Christ is the Beginning of the first creation and the Beginning of the new creation. Everything was created in Him, through Him and for Him.
Christ Himself declares: "I am the Arche of God's creation." The Logos of John 1, glorified and revealed, claims the title directly.
The last chapter of Scripture closes the circle: "I am the Alpha and Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End." Bereshit answered. The thread complete. ✝️
The very first word of the Bible — Bereshit — is a seed containing the full revelation of Christ. He is the Beginning through whom all things were made, the Wisdom present at creation, the Word who became flesh, the Arche of all creation and the Telos — the goal and completion — of all history. Scripture does not merely mention Him. It begins with Him, centres on Him and ends with Him. The whole Bible is one long answer to the question hidden in its first word. ✝️
